First of all, gen 7 had like 10x the amount of forced dialogue and cutscene gen 5 had.
Second, the dialogue in the older games was quicker since it was just mashing the A button when someone was talking. In gen 6 onwards there were forced animations, changing camera angles etc instead of the static top-down view.

Gen 6 definitely has moments of bad railroading, like the early Snorlax block making you go back and forth vetween 2 places 3 times each or the early cave that is literally a thin line that opens into another, wider line and is reached by riding Ryhorn along a line.

LGPE isn't open world because you have agency retard. The game is linear as fuck and still blocks your progression in several ways, including ones that weren't in the original like the Construction Worker with Geodude in Mt.Moon.

Player agency has nothing to do with a large number of roadblocks across the series (as in, you directly effect their state and do something to disperse it), I'm just saying that fact didn't change with Alola.

SM64 and Odyssey aren't "open world", that's a common misnomer. They're sandbox games that still directly gate both your story and gameplay progression through specifically designed progress markers. The same goes for Gens 1 and 2. BOTW is Open World because it gives nearly everything you need in the first few hours and tells you to go ahead. The only roadblocks present for the vast majority of the game are strong enemies and environmental hazards that people can and HAVE gotten around with clever use of available tools that were directly provided to the player by the game itself. That's what open world is.

Yeah, which is good game design since the player has the agency to do all of those things rather than feeling like there's nothing else to do. You can get the Old Rod and catch Magikarp from Jubilife, you can go northward instead to east and catch a Budew, when you get to Oreburgh you can still go north to get Machop or Ponyta, and the only real roadblock at that point is not having Rock Smash. There's the bike slope above Oreburgh but that's something the player will eventually have complete control over the next time they run into it without needing to do something as mundane as have a story character straight up give the item to you.

You realize the dot doesn't actually control you right? Other than a few story scenes you can walk around available areas whenever you want, just like other games. In fact, the game even encourages it at times like before you leave Mele mele or before most Kahuna battles.

You're forced to go to Lake Verity and back to Twinleaf from Sandgem to get the Journal, you can't leave Jubilfe to the east until you visit both the Trainer School and get the Poketch. You'd have to be a moron to not want the Poketch, and you get a bit of story development at lake Verity and Jubilife (at least in Platinum) but I don't really feel like I have any agency there, either.
