Gonna leech off this thread, never played past gen 3 but getting a DS for HGSS. Should I bother with D or P or just play Pt?

If I hadn't played RSE, I would only recommend myself to skip RS and only play Emerald. It's basically the same thing but better.

Just play Platinum. Try D/P if your curious for another time. I played Diamond back when it came out and went on a hiatus with Pokemon and started playing the series again this year with Platinum and it's a much better experience.

Interesting optional areas like old chateau, fuego ironworks, sendoff springs (in DP) and wayward cave. Iron Island has that side quest for Riolu too. Cool event areas like newmoon island as well. Battle Resort is a really fun area to go through. The atmosphere of Sinnoh in general is really nice. I'd say Sinnoh is a transitionary period, not as linear but not very railroaded either.

no, it's definitely roalroaded. The only exploration in the game is just backtracking to previous areas and using HMs. It's about as railroaded as unova and kalos are, the only difference being that unova and kalos are more obvious about it because the region is a fucking circle.

It's completely optional in DP, and in Platinum you don't actually have to enter the caves for it, you can grab it and go.

yeah, but the hms took 2 or 3 seconds to use them, instead of 3 slow as shit seconds of text boxes + a long ass 5 seconds animation, the surf segments are even worse
