I don't get it, I played DPPt as a kid and never had any issues with navigating through Mt. Coronet. Why did people suddenly start complaining about it being too "complex"? Is Coronet just an effective pleb filter?

Remove Rock Smash and increase Pokemon variety and it's already halfway decent.
And it's the mountain famed for being the tallest peak and at the center of it all, and yet there's no gimmick where if you walk to one of the edges on the peak it shows you the view of that side of Sinnoh?

I wasn't a toddler by diamond/pearl (iirc around 13) but I found it really easy, didn't have trouble either in platinum. I was so bored that I almost ditched pokemon altogether.
