Cyrus was very clearly hurt by his failures in life, and his emotions ended up becoming a burden on him. It's not unusual for real people to feel like this, which is why a lot of people turn to drugs and alcohol to escape.
Cyrus became warped by his pain and sought to eradicate emotions, instead of just temporarily numb them.
In Platinum, after you thwart his plan, he goes deeper inside the Distortion World probably to kill himself. Cyrus felt very human to me, compared to some of the other villains.
To me it makes a lot more sense than Hoenn for example, but honestly I don't think you can really go wrong with something simple like Gen 1 and 2's plot.
