I'm playing SMT 4 now. I think it's overrated. The gameplay is too luck dependent to truly be called harder than Pokemon.

I had the same experience. I'd get my ass handed to me during a boss battle and then reload and wipe them out with no issue. A heavy-RNG game where you walk around boring dungeons with high enemy spawn rates isn't what I consider fun, which is weird because I've heard a lot of people say IV is supposed to be one of the better ones

I think a lot of people are afraid to stray away from something they have loved for so long, and it is amplified when its such a lasting franchise and endearing as pocket monsters. But just know that taking a break from anything doesn't mean you have to give up on it all together. I stopped playing pokemon after the heart gold/soul silver remakes and the new upcoming game has sparked my interest!

remember that taking a break from anything is healthy and will probably make you happier as a person, there is always time to come back to it later

What do you mean by "quit"? You know you don't have to be balls deep into Pokemon ALL the time and you can play other games, right? You can come back to a game to replay it or just have some battles and shit every so often. It's not an all or nothing thing.
