The more I look at this region, the more it feels like it was supposed to be something great. Masuda put his all into Unova, and wanted to finish it off with an equally great region. So why? So many loose ends yet so many references, theories. and allusions. I’m sticking with this franchise until we get Kalos remakes. This region needs fleshing out, and I think we deserve closure.

I don't see gen 5 as a real cutoff point because XY still feels in a transitional period. XY isn't any different from Diamond and Pearl (KANTOOOO pandering aside). It could have had its Z to proceede as usual. It could have had a good RSE remake. XY still met all the expectations they set (as bad as they were). ORAS is when something undoubtedly went wrong and Game Freak started doing LESS than expected (and has been doing less and less since, with SM potentially being the only exception, but I don't like that game either).

Gen 6 would've been shit no matter what they did because GameFreak only put effort into their games with 2D art and Pokemon designed for it. Kanto all the way to Unova. Once they outsourced putting their own Pokemon into the game, their creative drive died.

XY was mostly hated since shortly after its release, at least on /vp/. The rest of the Internet didn't seem to care much until later on. Still, I don't think people thought of it "killing the series" at the time, or else no one would have hoped for ORAS to be good or for a Z to come out. The series has been disappointing for nearly a decade at this point, which is why most people don't even consider Legends Arceus being great as a real possibility. Not entirely true. Kalos is just incomplete as a region, it’s an entire country as a region and feels horrible to play through. A proper fix of the games would have to work from the beginning and make the region feel more natural and less like an amusement park or tourist trap and more like an actual region. RS and DP at least was already complete in the region sense, and their third version only added improvements. XY’s third version would need a drastic overhaul in the core principles behind those games itself

The game still has the national Dex, the ability to fish everywhere, didn't rely on a regional gimmick to try and give it's region an idea identity, didn't resort to blind Kanto pandering just to get a rise out of people who don't even play the games anymore, didn't get rid of triples or rotation, and added a plethora of other great features that were promptly removed in the games that came after ORAS.
XY are foundationally good. SM removed that foundation which is why it's the universal point where things went downwards.
