First of all, this "regional gimmick" thing itself is a redundant term and created randomly by some
autist on here, which means it has no bearing on the actual canonicity of the franchise. Mega evolution is a gimmick, just as Z moves and Dynamax are. It is unlocked/activated by the use of a stone, it requires the player to wear a tacky accesory, it gives your pokemon an in battle power up and makes your pokemon retardedly powerful in many cases, and all three were heavily used to promote their respective games and made into toys to sell. Being regional is not a requirement for being a gimmick.
This is like arguing whether shit served in a plastic plate is different from shit served in a Tiffin box.
