There's one big thing that distinguishes Megas from Z-Moves and Dynamax.
The former was integrated fair enough into the battle system and world and coexisted with the other mechanics.
The latter two are just nuke buttons that change the moves and seem to just be shittier replacements of existing shit.

Gems and Z-Moves are literally the same damn thing except the latter lets you choose when to use it. And they still live on now via Dynamax.

What is the meaningful difference between, say for example, a grass gem and a miracle seed? Why do you need the gems so bad when the same thing already exists?

Gems are a 30% boost once vs a 20% boost always. Either way its basically the same thing. Who cares if you don't have a fire gem anymore, use charcoal.

Why would I use something that only boosts one type for 20% when I can boost all of my attacks by 30% with a Life Orb, or boost my Attack or Special Attack by 50% with a Choice Band or Specs?

Gems were used for the same reason Z-Moves were used; for wallbreaking and getting rid of troublesome Pokemon

Nobody is going to use something as piss weak as a Miracle Seed; it doesn't matter how much damage the attack does if it doesn't KO the target

Have you ever played pokemon before? The faster you kill the other guy the easier it is for you its not that hard. Why would you give the enemy an extra chance to attack or do something when you can just skip their turn entirely by killing them? 90 percent of the time casually or competitively you want to kill the other pokemon as fast as you can unless you're running some stall gimmick shit
