My first ever shiny was a long while back on my first time through Heartgold. I was surfing in the very small body of water outside of the dragons den cave entrance, when I encountered a gold MAGIKARP. I knew that it was shiny from the sparkle, but immediately realized that I already have a shiny Gyarados - and so does everyone else who plays the game. Because I didn't want to evolve it, it ended up just being something I showed off to my friends and left in my PC. Kinda sad, I wish my first shiny was a little more unique and usable, but it is what it is.

My first Gen 2 shiny was gotten through somehow fucking up the cloning glitch in a way that gave one Pokemon's properties to another.
>Be me, discover cloning glitch, use it to farm Rare Candies to train Pokemon up for Stadium 2
>Cloning some Mon in Crystal, was using my party which happened to include Gyarados and Suicune
>Somehow mess it up and clone just Suicune...with all of Gyarados' attributes including Shininess
>Get super hyped, boot up Stadium 2 to see my new Shiny in 3D
>Game ends up correcting it to be Gyarados
I've had some amazing RNG since though. Just about anytime I start a new playthrough of a Gen 2 game I seem to find at least one new Shiny, even romhacks.

I have always wondered this about games with Johto in them because they objectively have a shit level cutve, but does the inclusion of the RTC/day cycle imply that you are suppose to pick the game up, know when to be on for trainers to rematch you, and then level up through rematches while you search for the rarer gen II Pokemon? I'm not trying to throw shade on the games, genuinely curious if that was the intention.

The intention of Gen 2 is that you are supposed to thoroughly explore both regions, and encouraged to revisit locations on different days. Get numbers from other trainers who will tell you about Swarms, meet the days of the week kids, the Mt. Moon Clefairy event, Lapras event etc etc.

Found shiny Zubat on Ilex Forest, didn't notice it, tried to flee, game didn't let me. Not sure if that's a mechanic or I was just lucky.

Found shiny Tentacool. Killed it accidentally.

Found shiny Poliwag. Evolved it and transfered it to Stadium 2. It retains the shininess. Prety cool.

Catch a Gastly in Sprout Tower and have it use Hypnosis on Teddiursa, it can't flee while it's asleep and that doubles the catch rate too.
