Super saiyan forms were cool for the time but now...they were kind of bad. Mega Charizard X looks like shit, Blastoise too with those ears, I don't like Gengar's either, and Heracross was just an abomination. I recall thinking Metagross looked dumb when it leaked and while I admit I was hyped for the Salamence, Lopunny, and Altaria news, croissant Salamence looks terrible. There were barely any interesting themes, most of the time they just took the design and just drew more shit on it.

They should have just been evolutions so Gamefreak couldn't ignore and retcon them like other gimmicks. Anyone attached to dynamax will have the same problem come Gen 9.

At the time I'm pretty sure we all thought they were gonna be a permanent addition instead of a gimmick. The fact that only a couple of starter trios got them still doesn't feel right.

They were shit and just used for pandering.
Mechanically they were fucking stupid, and didn't actually make the game more interesting. It was basically every team can have 1 broken pokemon
Pretty much every mega was overdesigned and they were only given to popular mons instead of shitmons that needed buffs.

Some of them should have been evolutions, mawile, sableye and altaria come to mind. charzard having two is whack and x looks out of place among starter evolutions megas. Some are crap and make pokemon worse without items, and some are pretty cool.
