It felt a bit restrictive for teambuilding for me. You're actively putting yourself at a disadvantage if you're not using a mega, so it felt like you're kinda forced to use one. Granted with 46 mons with mega there's a good chance that you'll like at least one of them but still

Z-moves and D-Max might be objectively worse mechanics but at least you can use them with any mon you want.

Fucking hidden abilities made more Pokemon viable than megas did, and more often than not megas made shit Pokemon even WORSE because of power creep. Which is better, Luxray in a game where only Salamence, Gengar, Metagross, and Kangaskhan exist, or Luxray in a game where those four AND Mega Salamence, Mega Gengar, Mega Metagross, and Mega Kangaskhan exist?

Hidden abilities wouldn't help the likes of Mawile, Houndoom, Kangaskhan, Absol, Banette, ect. They needed improved stats which their megas gave them, hidden abilities are only helpful to mons that aren't suffering from total dogshit stats

Mega-Beedril is one of the best megas though due to it's insane highly base attack combined with Adaptability and the ability to just spam U-Turn, obviously Mega-Salamence is better but Beedril isn't competing with it, they have totally different uses

Are you retarded? Most of these would become viable simply by giving them their Mega abilities. Also Banette, Houndoom, and Absol were still hot garbage even with their Megas because of said power creep.

Yes it is. I can only use a Mega Evolution once per battle. Why would I pick a Mega that’s merely “good” at best when I could just use a broken one instead?

The execution was just awful. Dev favorites got all the good stuff while the rest was left eating shit assuming they even got anything. Designs were about 75% miss, 25% hit. By the end of ORAS only 4 Megas saw any real competitive use.

It was clear GameFreak had absolutely no idea how fix all of this mess, especially the competitive side. Daily reminder they thought fucking Crabrawler would fix the meta https://youtu.be/fpfRTWisNdY

Scrapping the whole thing was the correct thing to do.
