I like the message it carries, specially after watching what should have been in place of the shitty pikachu short. M1 Mewtwo is a great character for a pokemon movie. Mew on the other hand didn't do much, it felt really... Boring.

The anime's being so conservative about battles has always baffled me, but doubly so in the earliest episodes. They clearly didn't have the time and money for it and I do like kinds of stories we got in their place, but when even "the movie" can't have a battle sequence between two Pokemon run longer than 10 seconds you really feel like your missing something.

It was pretty horrendous. Why did no one except Ash do anything the entire movie? Why did some completely rando pokemon cry for Ash when even his friends didn't? Such a silly movie, good soundtrack though.

That's it, which means that there were also back then the only two scenes that really stuck. I remeber that I indeed had tears in my eyes during that dying and crying scene as well and overall liking it and the message, what I disliked was the whole goddamn "you forget everything"/memory deletion thing which is such a cheap device, one step over "It was all a dream".

Do you mean Miranda? Jenny was in the movie but there was nothing distinct about her. I don't remember any shot with her on a pier, but it's also been years since I saw it.

I always thought it was funny how every single other trainer, who are supposed to be Ash's peers, were visible throughout the movie with teams that absolutely mogged his. They all had full teams of fully evolved mons while Ash still had a bunch of first forms and Charizard. It was absolute wank when he beat Raymond (who had a hype-filled moment where Donphan is shown for the first time, though the hype is quickly killed when his Donphan jobs to Ash's Bulbasaur) early in the film.
The movie wouldn't probably had more room to be good if it wasn't forced to share continuity with an anime series that is completely devoid of an arc or progression for the main character. As silly as it might sound, there's only so much suspension of disbelief I can muster even in a movie about laser-shooting animals. God I fucking hate how Ash is handled.

And? Donphan is a big beefy brute of a monster that can move quickly and is being shown for the first time. It looks like a serious threat, and the fact that it's new is reason to get excited. For it just to job immediately is a totally blueballing decision. If losing to a first stage Pokémon was non-negotiable, the least they could have done it actually let it injure or defeat some of Ash's mons. Instead, it got two hits off and got KO'd. Might as well have been a fucking Ratatta.

Yep, I love it. The story, animation, characters, etc. My favorite parts are Mewtwo's armor, his backstory, & the nonchalant reveal of Donphan. Not to be a boomer, but I have fond memories of me asking my sister & friends if they knew what Pokemon that was.

I still rock the soundtrack CD in my car sometimes.

I like the first third of it. Mewtwo's being a clone and everything that meant being the center of the movie rather than a quick backstory was a much, much more thoughtful idea than anyone involved in the TV series would have ever asked for. But once Mewtwo is clearly introduced he's too right to be swayed and too powerful to be defeated, so the movie just spins its wheels with whatever it can come up with for another half hour until it just ends. The spectacle and all the nicely animated Pokemon were nice, they are half of what you are there for, but then it ends and nothing happened, nothing was resolved, you have no idea how you got there.

Silly as it is to say, it is part of the experience of the thing. Pokemania came westward at the end of the 90's, and a shot of late 90's pop takes you back there of that from another angle.

The exact same question can be applied for most of the early anime. Remember the Indigo League, where Team Rocket tried to steal the Moltres flame and a ton of Pokemon in a stadium full of Pokemon trainers, and Ash was literally the only one who tried to do anything? Misty and Brock just fucking stood there reacting the whole time even when it looked like Ash was going to be incinerated, and then they all act like it didn't even happen moments later.

They were b-sides or album fillers from artists associated with the soundtrack's label whose mangers were doing favors to get promo for their clients. Most soundtracks have always only had 1/3 the album be featured in the film (or credits) and the rest be label advertising.

I mean anime budget will give anime budget results, but this was the first movie and Brock and Misty did nothing the entire time, they just watched the events unfold and stood there. This same thing happens in the next movies as well. At least in the third movie Misty and Brock get a battle even though they both get bodied.
