In FRLG, there's someone who tells the player to watch out because Victory Road is full of trainers heading for the Pokemon League, so no, they are not hired by the Pokemon League, they're trainers. Presumably they are trying to shorten the competition by knocking other trainers out before they can get to the Indigo Plateau conference hall.

My head canon has always been that it's more of a biyearly event, and a survivor type thing. There are about 5 entrances. Each participant enters through an entrance, and then some minutes later the next, and so on. If you come across any trainers, you must defeat them. There are wild pokemon and HMs for additional difficulty. Anyone who makes it across is scheduled for the pokemon league challenge.

I've always hated the 'go through this cave, battle the E4 immediately, become champion' thing.
The one thing Galar did right was actually making the fight to become champion a big important event for strong trainers.

This begs an interesting question: are there any Victory Road trainers in any of the games that would do even halfway well against the elite four? Because as far as I can recall they usually just have three mon teams that are stacked with shit that's more so annoying than dangerous.

Flawless Platinum has every NPC in victory road use 6 pokemon and I hear it's tedious as FUCK so I assume for gameplay reasons they are weaker than they reasonably should be, but all victory road trainers have 8 gym badges. They might not be able to get past the first E4 member though.

Actually reading this anon it came to me that it was probably Silver but also its probably since the route to Kanto took its place. You have to go through two routes before you even hit the gates with countless trainers squatting. in gen 1 that route did not have any trainers. In short they simply moved the trainers outside the cave.

I feel like if Pokemon journeys were a real thing, there would be a ton of rich kids whose parents would pay for hotel rooms. Everyone else has to camp outside, go to hostels or the free Pokemon Center beds (which, let's be honest, would be gross, dirty & full of sketchy people).

How many people on Pokemon journeys would be literal children is another matter.

I remember a YouTube video someone made which analysed the Pokemon trainers in Red/Blue and had each of their AI battle one another. It’s been ages since I saw it but I’m sure the E4 lost occasional battles to standard trainers.

If you have a full 6 team and swap one or two mons out at anytime after Goldenrod, then you will probably be underleveled. However, using a smaller team causes you to be overleveled.
