Leg muscles might be stronger than arm muscles, but a properly thrown punch by a trained boxer uses the leg muscles as well as the arm muscles to push themselves forward. plus the big boxing gloves can be used for protection.

PLUS hitmonlee looks like a stupid among us space man with no real head and just eyes in his body. how does this motherfucker even eat?

Yup. 115 Special in Gen 1 would have made a much bigger difference in surviving hits than dealing them; Hitmonchan is 2-hitting very low special targets that could probably hit it back at least as hard at best. But gosh their not being made tissue paper in at least one respect would have been nice.

87 speed meant Hitmonlee is just fast enough that it's flimsy defences are outweighed by its brutal 120 attack stat
hitmonchan only had 76 speed and 105 attack
but the 50 hp 79 defence meant it was still flimsy
hitmontop's 95 defence gave it some ability to take a couple of hits

1. Kicks when done right are stronger due to muscles, mass and laws of physics. And you can also ask any ufc fighter about that too.
2. Boxing gloves reduce potential damage from a punch.

I like Throh and Sawk as a duo better than Hitmonchan and Hitmonlee. At least in terms of concept.
Karate and Judo are a lot more distinct than punching and kicking. Especially in an RPG, where there's functionally no difference between punches and kicks besides flavor.
Plus they have the same basic design, but with different body types to match their martial arts. Like Urshifu done right before Urshifu even existed.

how would yo balance the 250 stat spread across attack, defense and speed?

Hitmonchan was basically there to show off elemental pucnhes. Hitmontop sucks so much it's only used as a Rapid Spin user in 6v6 singles, and pretty much exclusively in Smogon's lower tiers. Hitmonlee sucks as well but way less than the others. Hitmonchan is so bad it's untiered.

You haven't entered a dojo yourself, have you? There's a reason why most knock outs are from punches not kicks even in the UFC. Albeit kicks are in fact stronger, they are also more difficult to throw and easier to dodge, especially to the head for a KO. They are also more risky, a failed high kick in leaves you up and open for a counter. It takes someone incredibly skilled (even for MMA standards) like Mirko CroCop to use kicks as a regular KO tool, most use mainly low kicks to chip away your stamina, endurance and speed plus some side kicks to keep you out of range. So despite kicks being stronger, punches are still a much more reliable way to KO someone out.

They've been empirically proven to make punches hit harder. Not only can you punch harder without fear of breaking your hand, but the added bulk adds to the power of the strikes (while not being heavy enough to limit the speed of the punch).

Sumo wrestlers are quite fast and explosive, especially at the opening charge. It's their poor cardio that prevents them from maintaining their speed.

Nah, it just comes down to whether you prefer Attack or Defense.

I won't say Hitmonlee actually looks like a monster or something stupid like that, since Hitmonchan does look like a monster; it looks like a living doll, as opposed to a person in boxing gloves. Although the fact its gloves are red is kind of weird and it makes me wonder if those are an accessory that every Hitmonchan just happens to get ahold of or people typically put on their Hitmonchan.

But I will say Hitmonlee has a more interesting design what with its stretchy limbs and potato body.

If you want pointers for some good fighting manga /a/ really is a better option and if there's a fighting thread up you can ask in there what they might recommend but you have to phrase it properly. there are couple of other really quite good martial arts manga.

It's not 1999 anymore. Every successful MMA fighter uses a mix of striking and grappling.

Even Khabib wouldn't be as good as he was if he didn't have any striking ability.

Unless you're referring to the potential damage to the puncher, no.
Bare knuckle boxing actually has fewer injuries, although the injuries sustained are much more visually apparent. (Ripped skin compared to brain trauma)
This is because gloves not only make your fists heavier, but also make the puncher a lot less apprehensive about hitting at full force.

The gloves entirely benefit the puncher.
