Nope. The only other thing close to a plot is professor missions which are given after certain goals are met.

The wild area but more empty. It feels like a slightly open world ps2 game, where you can go anywhere but theres nothing to see

Only for bosses. Its like pokken. You can move at all times, but you can't use moves until the stamina bar fills. In the overworld you can throw a pokeball, but its the same odds as from half health.
