Generally if a romhack/fangame shuts down it either

Or
>got too big in advertising (getting enough attention for GF/TPC to notice)
As long as a hack stays small and free it's technically legal as a non-profit parody/fan project.

I liked Unbound a lot. Theres even an option to remove edgy content from the story. Some of the puzzles are complete fucking bullshit though, so don't feel bad if you look up how to do them on youtube.

Drayano hacks are gold when you want to play the original games but better.
Radical Red is the epitome of difficulty hacks, it's tuned to push even competitive players to their limits.
Prism, Gaia and Clover are the best story/new region hacks in my opinion.

That's the cream of the crop as far as I can tell.

Oh and Crystal Clear if you want an open world gen 2 hack. Some people will be turned off by the cringey OC or its commitment to faithfulness to gen 2 (it lacks things like physical/special split and doesn't alter Pokemon stats, etc).
Divisive hack but I like it, it's technically amazing if anything.

Pokemon Run is pretty great. It's similar to Colloseum/XD by having and option to steal pokemon from certain oponents but on the other hand they can steal yours if you loose. It's quite challenging but also very rewarding if you manage to defeat an opponent that is severly overleveled (there are some situations when there is 10,20 lvls difference). It has quite engaging story and great atmosphere but is quite edgy at times (sacrificing your pokemon to move their exp to another mon, gain items etc) so this may annoy you. Also currently it's on hiatus (not cancelled) and has about 15 hours of gameplay.
