IIRC it exists outside of gen 8, but Sheer Force for some reason removes the recoil damage from a Life Orb while keeping the power boost, so it just becomes a free bonus.

No recoil from Life Orb has been a thing with Magic Guard since Gen 4 when Life Orb was introduced and Sheer Force when it was introduced in Gen 5.

Additional effect = Chance of status or stat change. Recoil from recoil moves is a primary effect and thus recoil move damage isn't negated by Sheer Force. The reason why Life Orb recoil is negated with Sheer Force is because the recoil it provides is an additional effect, not a primary effect.

I bet you often faced Mega-Camerupt in TR or Nidoking and you had no idea how to counter it.

Just use a counter. Smogon will tell you what's best. Then you're better prepared and you will never seethe over Sheer Force anymore.
