I remember in the OG anime Ash actually tried catching Pokemon, now he usually just catches 5 just so he has a team for the region he's in at the time. Ash is slacking

Pikachu was weaker in general. The Iron Tail missed and you saw he was wobbly and disoriented. He didn’t have swirly eyes and wasn’t even KO’d and Ash rushed him off to the professor because his Pikachu was unconscious due to being ill and fatigued. He even states it was due to Zekrom.

Pikachu landed the first Quick Attack and that alone should have KO'd Snivy. This is the same Pikachu that fought legendaries. Even if that Snivy had experience before it went to Trip AND Zekrom dicking over Pikachu, it shouldn't have lost that easily.
