To be fair, I can't blame them for thinking it was clever.
The main reason people play Pokemon is Stockholm Syndrome. It has "Pokemon" in the title, so they buy. But Pokemon had long since gone to shit.
But what if they made a game that has "Pokemon" in the title, but was actually good (and therefore nothing like Pokemon).
Just remove all of the old Pokemon and replace them with Digimon, but call them "Pokemon".
Unfortunately, GF didn't count on people actually playing the game and getting uncomfortable with how different everything was, but it seemed like a good idea on paper.
