Eventually Ash and Goh's dicking around led them to Mewtwo, and it decided to test their resolves at their request. Ash wanting to be his own made-up title of Pokemon Master that defeating Mewtwo would somehow further him towards, and Goh wanting to Catch 'Em All, Mewtwo obviously included.
To no one's surprise it curbstomped their Pokemon, gave some exposition that the island is where it was helping abused Pokemon, gave them cliched talk on the budding potential of their Power of Friendship bullshit, and warped them back to Vermillion.
