Is there any reason to play SM, or is USUM better in every way? I never played gen 7 before

Depends on taste. USUM has the ultra wormholes and the rainbow rocket post game, but I think the story arc for Lillie and Lusamine is better in SM.

Play SM. It's a story based game, so you want to play the version that actually makes sense. USUM may have more stuff but is by no means better.

I prefer US/UM but I can get how people like SuMo better. I much prefer the plot and post game for USUM. I thought the ultra wormhole mini game was a excellent idea.

Lusamine is alerted to the presence of Necrozma by the inter-dimensional beings and her goal is to go and defeat it, but still needs to use Nebby's power so in the end she was a misguided hero. Lillie is a bit more competent and gets a clefairy and doesn't go to Kanto.

In the original, she was only a problem if you kept using Popplio, since she had a Magnemite in SM. In USUM she has the starter strong against yours and will take advantage of that. She's meant to make you realize you shouldn't only be using your starter.

You know all the fucked up shit Lusamine does in the original, and how she dressed up Lillie like Nihilego, all because she was obsessed with it and was driven insane? She still does all of that in USUM, but without any of the context that allowed her actions to make sense, while also ostensibly being completely in her right mind, and everyone acts like just jaywalked.
