There are like 5 people making those mockups and they're able to produce maybe a few a year. For even an above-average indiedev to try and make something of that quality of the scope of even gen1 would take a decade.

It's a bunch of different people, and their styles differ. You can see it very clearly in the project https://retroredrawn.com/johto/
Some do it "tile based", making it look amazing but clearly keeping it to a grid. Others feel more like a drawing done in pixel art.

There's also that one artist who makes models and turns them into sprites. While others would shit on it, it'd love to see 3d gsc sprites with battle animations.

It's because the transition to 3D for the mainline games, which not everyone was on board with, set them back ages. Had they stayed the course with pixel art, we might have Kanto/Johto redrawn tier games by now.

Yeah I've done a few.
It'll be a while, but we're gonna go back to Johto and do the interiors before moving on to Hoenn.

Adding interiors and Sevii Islands tripled our workload but it's worth it. People really seemed to love making interior maps.
We just got to 52 Kanto maps yesterday.
