It's possible some of the waifu mon or whatever would've generated a metric shitton of controversy in America from moralfaggery, and just end up making Pokemon "edgy" because the parents say it's satanic or leads to lust.
You also have to consider that the standard anime art of the period (80s as well) heavily influenced Pokemon itself. Taking that into account, we'd likely never see "Nu gen" style designs anyways in a prior time placement. It would be considered too weird or more likely "too western" to the Japanese audience, too different to the core environment.
