I don't like how Salamence floats in the air since Pokémon X and Y. Dunno how to really articulate it, but when it stood on the ground in the GameCube and Wii games, there was something significantly more imposing about it, something more regal and cooler.

It's solidly built, like it's mostly land based and the wings are mainly for gliding. Even the proper flying mons like Noctowl have this issue though.

Sky Battles also ruined Eelektross. I miss when it was playfully bouncing on the ground during battle, instead of just floating in place like a work-in-progress animation.

Quite literally in its name, salamence was more MENACING in its ground stance. Like it was always rearing for a deadly strike.

Because making new animations is a difficult task for a indie developer, especially when all the effort is dumped into making sure that Charizard has a new special-snowflake form and that all the latest Rock and Ice-type Pokémon are shit.

Now that GF's been dragged into the Main Nintendo compound there's a slight chance their work ethic might improve somewhat, even if the (hopefully positive) results aren't immediately apprent for a while

Correct me if I'm wrong, but most Pokemon in Stadium/Colo/PBR had separate animations for if they were on the ground or in the middle of using Fly didn't they?

Yes. A small handful of pokemon kept their idle animations when using moves like Fly, typically either those who weren't supposed to be using Fly in the first place or extreme outliers, or a small handful of pokemon that are just genuinely always airborne. Fearow, for example, has just always been a pokemon that always flew.

I'm still surprised Eternal Darkness turned out as well as it did, even if there's still a bit of jank. Silicon Knights fell HARD after that game.

it looked kinda goofy, but it's not like the mainline doesn't do that shit too

This is so weird when you remember every Pokemon had walking and running animations in Sun and Moon's files, there was nothing stopping them from using those animations for Z moves, since a number of them had the Pokemon rushing in at some point, but they just don't, resulting in a ton of animations where a Pokemon's idle is just flying at high speed without moving.

So many pokemon look awful now. Typhlosion, Nidoking, Archeops, Skarmory (though I know in the GCN/Wii titles it was also flying, but in my opinion it should be on the ground like it’s actual gen 3/4 sprites.) to name a few.
