I was mistaken that Emma said it since it's been a while that I played XY. One of her preschool lackeys says it instead, but there could be more of them that also refer to the XY protags as young adults. Keep in mind that Emma is stated in the game to be 16 so do with that as you will.

No they weren’t, they were 14. It’s in one of those data guides. And I think the manga went with 14 too.

The XY protags are canonically 17+ because of Emma. And in ORAS they specify May and Brendan are 12 years old, preteens. The Gen 7 protags are specified to be 11 years old, and there is no age given for the Gen 8 protags but they look they are in their teens as well.

Emma is stated to be 16, and the player is taller than her which brings up the older age theories. In reality the player is shown to be older than Emma when the kids she hangs out with call the player a grown up, even though Emma is allowed.
