The Bulba-line is pretty much designed to be strange looking and mysterious in a way that you can't quite parse what they are at first glance. It's made a lot more clear in the Japanese names which all contain the word "Fushigi" meaning Mysterious or Strange. Hell Bulba's name is a pun meaning both "Strange seed" and "It's strange, isn't it?" (Fushigidane)
