For one, Squirtle was always less meek than Charmander, what with being the leader of his own team of Squirtle, he had presumably been abandoned much longer and immediately settled the score with Ash by saving him back.
For what its worth, Charmander saved Pikachu from Team Rocket the very next day. But the main thing, at the root of all of this, is that Charmander leveled up too much and evolved.
They say it in the very same episode Ash gets Charmeleon. The old lady says Ash needs to train it. He never does. He has it for like, one more episode I think, and then it turns into a Charizard purely for its own motives. I think she even says, it doesn't respect Ash, because it outpaced him. It still wept for Ash in the Mewtwo movie and respected Tracey's Scyther.
Honestly, it's all Ash's fault for not putting on the brakes as soon as that incident with Charmeleon and Paras happened, but I understand why he didn't do that. Its hard to make the mature and reasonable decision all of the time, especially for a kid. He and Charmander were just cool, so Charmeleon's / Charizard's attitude was surprising and he probably thought he could smooth it over by pretending it wasn't a thing and trying to be its friend still. Even right after he loses to Richie, Ash tries to send Charizard out at a party and has to be stopped by Misty and Brock, so it can be chalked up to childish naivete and optimism.
