A named outdoor area connecting 2 places with its own encounter table. Caves/dungeons are a seperate category with a similar function. Personally I would count the Wild Area as equivalent to 4 or 5 routes minimum, but you could argue that each individual area counts.

the area is already split in like 9 different parts. Use those as your routes.

I’m assuming you’re nuzlocking? I always classify a ‘route’ as any separate location where Pokémon could be found. For example, the lake by twinleaf town doesn’t count as being part of route 201.

personally, i wish they'd ditch the routes and just have town boarders. paths and parts of the towns/cities can get their own unique names, but it's weird to have numbered walking paths

I hope gen 9 just removes routes altogether and just makes the entire region like the DLC map design.

They've been slowly working toward that. Kalos' routes had names and a lot of Alola was named areas in between routes, especially on Melemele.
