What will the Gen 9 gimmick be? Pokémon fusions? Pokémon wearing armour? Being able to dress your Pokémon up? That thing from Super Paper Mario where they briefly turn into the retro looking versions of themselves? Your player turning into a Pokémon and your Pokémon turning into humans? Something else?

If not fusion, then at least a tagteam mechanic. Some arbitrary type and ability combination rules because gamefreak and their fear of going all out, 4 to 6 instances of it during the main story but way more potential and gimmicks in the players hands... Would be cool.

"Aura forms" that can directly adjust base stats (either by taking points from one stat and dumping them in another, or just outright making it 80 or something). It also gives a Pokemon usage of all abilities that they can normally have (with some exceptions if it'd be too broken or self-defeating) and/or an all new super-powered ability. It only lasts one turn, but you get 5 opportunities to use it over the course of the battle for your entire team.
That's too specific to ever be right, but abilities haven't really had any focus as gimmick so I just shat something out that could give them a spotlight.

The gimmick will be that the region is divided into 5 sub regions.

The number of unique pokemon will be much smaller, but each pokemon has several regional forms. Also you get 5 different Charizard and Pikachu forms in the same gen

Certain shillmon can be converted into a 7th party member, who you can summon 3 times per battle to attack in place of your current mon, or tank an attack aimed at it.

Fusion, but it will have a Gigantamax style limitation that allows it to be open to every Pokemon but also allows for certain unique fusions. I imagine it like so:

There are 18 generic fusion mons, one for each type, and they all represent that type overall in some fashion. The flying type would be a winged creature but not specifically a bird, the fire type would be made of flames but not any particular creature, etc. These 18 generic fusions would have 17 additional variations with specific modifications, eg. the flying type winged creature could gain flames on parts of its body, the fire type flame creature would gain wings made of flame, all variations of this. The type and look of your fusion mon would be determined by one type from your first mon (this creates the base) and the type of your second mon (this adds additional feature to the base). This would be the only feasible way to do fusions without locking most pokemon out of it, and without the workload becoming umanageable.

Hypervaxing:
You inject your pokemon with a serum that swaps their color palete and applies a generic glow effect. Pikachu, lucario, charizard, and a few regional mascotmons will get a unique hypervax with tailored stats, but everything else is a generic palette swap and only receive a flat Base stat boost across the board.
The switch will drop to 3fps while active.

We've had stat and move gimmicks, so abilities or types are probably next. 3-type pokemon would be cool, maybe a held item that functions like Steelworker for whatever type it represents.

GF has been getting lazier and lazier, and even their gimmicks will begin to show this. Boiled down, the newest gimmick is simply increasing the size of your pokemon, and Z-moves.

Next gimmick will be Z-moves, and being able to "team up" pokemon in singles. You'll choose a "main" pokemon and an "ally" pokemon, and the "ally" pokemon will provide buffs and a bigger movepool to the "main" pokemon. If you knock out the "main" pokemon, you lose both. In battle, it just simply shows both models next to each other.

Some pokemon, like Ninjask and Shedinja, or Plusle and Minun, have special moves and such they get when paired together.
