Outside of the weapons thing, there's also a Water (Samurott), Air (Decidueye), and Earth (Typhlosion being a badger and volcano) theme going on.
Also, Typhlosion fits the best for a game based on Ancient Japan since its based on a Hinezumi from Japanese folktales, and its badger design elements could reference Tanukis (sometimes depicted as badgers instead of raccoon dogs). Also, the other Fire Starters look too much like something that either isn't Japanese or period accurate.
