Black and White can be difficult but it has more to do with the extremely restricted dex than anything else. It's still fun though.
Fire Red and Leaf Green are just Red and Blue but better and with less dogshit AI so go that if you just want KANTOOOOO experiences. It's very similar to B&W actually; regional dex only and good bosses with a tough but fun final challenge.
These are the only games in the series that can even claim to be remotely "hard", and keep in mind that they're still not that hard. They're just difficult by Pokemon Standards.
