1. The GBA cartridges
2. Colosseum, LeafGreen and Sapphire (or was it Ruby?, i don't remember clearly)
Or even better:
3. Have friends/a community that own the games you don't and are willing to trade with you

Gen 3 dropped the ball by not allowing Gen 2->3 transfers, but the franchise has always been built around trading with friends to collect them all.

Just as *today's* current "adults" are crying about needing home, the game, the DLC and the online "jUsT tO cOmPlEtE tHe PoKéDeX".

Again, it makes no difference since you can always lodge the same complaint at the previous gens. According to your logic, you always need to buy all 3 main games just to complete the dex.

You didn't need Home, online subscription or any other shit for completing the pokedex.
I only needed my GBA, FireRed and a link cable, thats it (less than $600 total). How was that possible? Because every single cartridge had every single pokemon programmed on it (Deoxys was on R/S, even if it was going to be released until FrLg) and even have enough capacity to hold a complete living dex inside it, all while at the same time i had many friends who played and most of them owned different games to the one i had.

If you're an adult, you can afford a gamecube and the two games, along with R/S + Emerald, and FR/LG. That's two systems, 5 games (4 of which are completely distinct), over a span of 2 years at least.

Home isn't a game and there was no major data readjustment that necessitated a split this gen.
