Why are so many of the Pokedex entries for Mega evolutions nightmarish? Is it a product of the localization? It seems fucked up that XY and celebrate Mega Evolution as something so cool, yet it brings agony to a bunch of the Pokemon subjected to it.

Because they were cutting the mechanic and didn't want kids getting too overtly attached to them, thus turned them into crapsack things (not that they didn't already show that side in the franchise already, but as a game mechanic, they didn't exactly wish to have the player lose control over their ME).
