If anything Ash should have been retired straught after Kalos regardless of his loss since his character was massacred by the executive producers in SM. Gen 7 should have had Moon as the MC with Lillie, Lana and Mallow orbiting aroumd her.
As for Marina, she should have been introduced straight in the Orange Islands as a companion for Ash and Misty instead of Tracey as a Pokemon artist doing legit paintings not whatever Tracey did.
Then she would meet Ash at the Silver conference.
