I gathered the implication that a lot of trainers aren’t fully aware of what ‘types’ are, so they sort of have to guess what is and is not a good matchup. By contrast, the player character is implied to be a savant that intrinsically knows what all the types are, how they match up, and what moves a pokemon learns.

It’s dramatically simplified for playee convenience, but in-universe supposedly it takes years of dedication to be halfway competent as a trainer. That’s why there aren’t people walking over the Elite 4 constantly
