It doesn't need good HP or Defense. Look at it's other stats. 120 Speed is going to outspeed just about anthing not named Dragapult in OU

It can't be 2 of the best mons in the tier, Slowking and Dragapult.
It's also weak to one most common moves in the game, U-turn.
It's also outclassed by Lele, but Alakazam can also use Lele's Psychic surge to spam Expanding Force.

It's still UUBL and OU viable. Pure psychic is not a great typing in this gen and Rillaboom and Weavile kill it before it has the chance to do anything

Because Game Freka can;t balance for shit. Gen 8 is so powercerpt that OU is pretty much the equailvent or Ubers of earlier Gens.

VGC player here, Alakazam was actually used a decent amount Pre-Crown Tundra. Indeedee using follow me + psychic terrain made it a stong user of Expanding Force, and fast & frail mons were pretty strong until they added more bulky steel types like Metagross, Heatran, and Celesteela in CT. Porygon-Z was used even more than Alakazam thanks to it pairing well with Togekiss
