Generation 5 is full of very intentional homages to RGBY. Cynthia shows up, and there's a Pokemon World Tournament where every single Gym Leader from the previous games also appears. The games are like an epilogue to that entire era, since the only reason the plot of the first two even works is because we've seen Pokemon be taken advantage of throughout the ENTIRE series up until that point. The inherent conceit of Black and White is that it is a bridge between past and future.
