We literally know that every Gym Leader/Elite Four member has a strategy to counter types they're weak to. If you're going to specialize in a type, you logically would train and come up with strategies to mitigate that type's weaknesses.

What are you talking about? Most gym leaders have very little to handle their counters. E4 tend to have stronger type diversity so at least their team isn’t fully swept by one type, but for most gym leaders you can spam one move and be done.

But even besides that there’s really no scenario where Fighting types beat Psychics in gen 1, as none of them are even neutral defensively against it, they almost all have shit special stats, and their movepools are too shitty and limited for the job. Poliwrath is the only one who stands a remote chance with Amnesia. Definitely one of the most brutal type matchups in series’ history.

Teaching their Pokemon coverage moves, using moves in inventive ways, or manipulating the battlefield to your advantage. Anything's possible when you view Pokemon battles as actual fights rather than as a game limited by its mechanics.

Yes. If Pokemon were real, that's how fights would play out. The games have never been an accurate representation of Pokemon battling. The game's battle system is a simplified abstraction meant to represent them fighting like they would in the anime.

We don't know what Pokemon that gym leader used. Mustard defeated Opal despite the type advantage and gym leaders have used Pokemon outside their type specialty before. Sabrina herself has used Venomoth so we don't know if the Fighting guy had like a Hypno or a Golem or something to counter the weaknesses.

If an attack was headed your way, would you just stand there? No, you'd try to dodge it. Same logic applies here. No one complains about dodging in any other show, so I don't see why it's complained about in Pokemon

In universe, Sabrina is probably one of the strongest Gym Leaders. I believe her Gym was implemented last in development and Saffron City used to be where the game terminated. I think the Pokemon League was there and then they moved it or something but I don't remember.

Game Freak said they used to apply the Psychic typing things to make them seem powerful, so I get the impression that just being able to handle Psychic-type Pokemon in the way Sabrina and her Gym Trainers do is a big deal.

Yes, originally Silph Co. contained not only the Elite 4, but Mewtwo as well. Interestingly Victory Road existed at this point, but it was just a big out of the way cave you'd explore to find a legendary (sort off like Cerulean Cave which didn't exist at this point, Seafoam Islands, and the abandoned power plant.)

im not that dude, but i made it to rank #76 in gen 1 randomizer on showdown and i completely agree with what was stated

typing is literally everything in gen 1, it's why the top 3 are normal types and the next 4 are psychics. the only electric up in the tiers is zapdos, and that's because it's ground weakness is negated by flying type. rhydon even makes it to the top just to stop the behemoth known as zapdos though.

i can't really speak for any other gens since I only play gen 1, but in this case yeah advantage type wins games. hard. it's why there are no poison or fire pokemon that have legitimate viability in the OU meta, they get completely squashed by earthquakes and poison squashed by earthquake and psychic

Supposedly the way the gym system works is you have to apply for a gym registration and already have somewhere suitable to operate it. And if you lose repeatedly, you can lose your gym registration.

Sabrina’s family is obscenely rich if I recall, so what probably happened is she just paid a heap of skilled psychic trainers to run a conga line on the fighting gym to force them to lose their registration, and then bought out their gym building before applying for the registration herself.

Type advantage is the deciding factor between two Pokemon of relatively equal power, commanded by Trainers of relatively equal skill. The anime is not a video game. It can't operate on video game logic because it would make no sense in the context of the anime.

Pikachu using his tail as a springboard is a tactic that's been used multiple times since, and no, the main reason Raichu lost is because Surge evolved it before it could learn Quick Attack or Agility. Once Pikachu learned those moves that Raichu missed out on, Raichu was too slow to be able to land any hits.

That’s part of it (and it was based of them to reference levels and pre-evo exclusive moves, shame they ignore the game mechanics now) but it still ultimately came down to pikachu “grounding” itself to prevent raichu’s significantly more powerful Tbolt from OHKOing it like in the first match.

it's extremely RNG dependent, for better or worse that's just the way things are. freezes are OHKO's and the games momentum can be completely reversed in one turn, if you're ok with that then you can have an absolute blast in gen 1.
