SMT has a different feel than Pokemon that makes it okay when not every demon is available. Instead of "me and my bros going on an epic adventure!" it's more like "me and my contracted slaves going to beat the shit out of God and/or Lucifer!" Also almost every SMT game takes place in it's own world, and even games on the same system can have wildly different mechanics, so transferring demons between games would never work (They couldn't even get the international Strange Journey passwords to work with the remake).

I genuinely thought they had took the time to "future proof" their models so that they could, with less effort, add all the pokemon to the game.

As far as pokemon clones go, this was incredibly fun and well done, with great monster designs and gameplay mechanics to excavate fossils and minerals. It was much better than pokemon at times. Also it made 3D work a console generation before pokemon.

If they actually delivered on improving what they did keep I'd agree. But rather than doing the bare minimum to improve we ended up having even more cut corners. A cutscene with no voice acting just text boxes for a SINGER of all things when as far back as gen 5 they were able to add vocals into the soundtrack without it being out of place. Camp took away your ability to pet and directly interact with your pokemon in favor of selecting menu options while essentially watching a fishbowl and cooking curry before watching a cutscene of them eating it instead of expanding on amie/refresh by allowing your whole team to be present while you hang out. The vast majority of moves are still just as simply animated as they always have been and the handful of signature moves that are well done are by their very nature things you will see much less often if ever in your playthrough than your common tackles and quick attacks that everyone will see hundreds of times. Note that the point is the quality of the animation, not the length, things you'll be seeing hundreds of times and aren't particularly special SHOULD be short so it doesn't get in the way. But when the animation consists of the pokemon in a static pose flashing off the screen for a second with a sprite popping in over the opposing pokemon often repetitively thus taking more time than a single longer animation, instead of animating the action they want to convey, that is taking the lazy route. The map design has been getting simpler every game and now it's at the point where there's nothing to explore, just hallways with a backdrop. Online match-making peaked in gen 6. It's been 1 step forward 2 steps back for a while, and though DLC added some good stuff it doesn't fix the base game nor have they restored all that was removed.

Whoever designed this thing and loki in p5 should be the designers since their designs are far more creative than just taking something from mythology and drawing it in an anime artstyle. They really did, but what else did they have going for them? The pokemon themselves are great monsters but the reason people got so attached to them in the first place vs moving on when some cooler thing came along is because we were encouraged to form bonds with them. A large part of that was the ability to trade/transfer and to this day that's the one thing that no other series has consistently had mechanics wise.

xy had all pokemon thanks to transfer, and coded and made all of the 3d models and animations from the ground up and also had to animate all the moves and make 3d graphics areas when they havent really done that stuff before
even if xy is worse than average, theres a reason, they actually decided to put in effort and have all pokemon
meanwhile at swsh we have 435 pokemon mostly reusing models and animations except for the new pokemon and they added barely any pokemon and some were just galarian forms anyway (the 15 or so new models have very minor changes)
they were just really lazy desu
