Why can't we play older generations online? I'm sure actual fans would prefer to battle in the DS games. At least Black 2 should be kept online for the Avenue.

if you're talking about ds and wij games it's because Nintendo contracted out their online multiplayer backend to a third party company for those systems and they refused to renew their contracts with Nintendo so there was no option but to shutdown as there was no way to update games to a different solution

You either change your router configuration or create a wireless hotspot from your computer or phone. It's a mess but it's doable. Either open or WEP password works on DS. Gen5 supports WPA when played on a DSi.

Very recently the ndsbootstrap tool for playing DS roms via SD directly on DSi or 3DS actually got updated to use the DSi binaries correctly meaning you can run DSi mode with WPA from a modded 3DS. Doesn't help Gen 4 titles though which are still locked to WEP/Open networks since they aren't DSi enhanced titles.

Huh. Any idea if Volt White or Renegade Platinum work with this? I'd assume they can't be that different from the base games but who knows.

Not certain but probably. You may need to rip your own copy of BW/2 and manually patch it as the first copy I just downloaded of the internet had the DSi binaries stripped out for some reason. If you have a 3DS though ripping DS games is a fuckin breeze.

For gen 5, you just configure a custom DNS on your 3DS or BW/2 copy. For gen 4, you do need an open WPA, which you can make with some phones.

You can still play online. In addition to reading the thread, here's my suggestion:
Get yourself to a flea market or secondhand store and buy an old WEP supporting router to use at home. You can find most setup softwares online.
