The funny thing is that a lot of the rumours had a grain of truth too. "Pikablu" was literally Marill. And Professor Oak was originally intended to be battled in the game, but was cut in the final version, and his team is still located in the game files.

I know this is a bait thread, but fuck it.
The reason a lot of rumors, no matter how dumb they sound now, were believable back then is that unlike nowadays entire games were not leaked online a few days before they even released, internet access was almost non-existent, so people couldn't just get angry on quadruplechins in regards to literally everything, the only actual way to get more knowledge without exchanging information obtained while playing the game were some dumb magazine guides that liked to print bullshit, so when that one kid invented a rumor for popularity, nobody could just Google it, people had to actually check it.

My neighbor's older brother told me he is 100% sure he found a Magmar in Cinnabar Mansion in Red version when he played it.
