Today's episode was a total repeat of the AG episode with Steven on Dewford Island. The gang fall into holes in caves, Max/Meowth or Koharu/Meowth bond, and the group gets mixed up with TR. Only here Jessie or James didn't travel with Ash or Go, like May/Jessie or James/Ash/Brock last time.

In terms of episodes Journies isn't too bad, it's just the "wasted potential."

For a series that could bring back tons of old characters or old pokemon, we're only getting the bare minimum, at least so far. I can even overlook/exclude Go's catching goal because that's not something I care about much, but the other aspects of the series can be improved.

Nah. Early DP had consistently good eps.

The only boring eps were Turtwigs capture ep (boring rehash of Bulbasaur's first ep), the Poketch episode, maybe that masked Roserade episode, and the Chingling filler and a few others.

If you look through DP's episode list important things were happening in almost every other episode especially in the first year.

As I said, Turtwig's capture ep was extremely boring. But most other important eps were good. The Roark Gym arc got 4 episodes, then Gardenia got multiple eps, the Maylene arc is known for the 4 ep span it got...inbetween that we had two Hunter J eps, the first foreshadowing of Team Galactic, and Dawn was in multiple Contests already.

I think the problem with Journies is since there's no Gym srtucture, we have no idea how far into the series we are. When we're in every other series and Ash gets badge 3, 4, 5, 6, etc....we know we're nearing the mid-point of the series. It feels like we're heading to the second half.

In this series even if Ash climbs the ranks fast, they can have him hover around ranks a long time if they have him loss or he only starts moving up 1 rank per win now, etc. So we have no idea how far we are into the series...

Early DP had consistent good eps, DP's slump is around the middle of the series when they started purposely stretching things out. But the early eps had so much happening. I remember back then everyone would say how there is barely any filler and almost every ep was worthwhile.

It's been awful for years before that thanks to the replacement VAs from 2006 onwards and Cathcart's miserable adaptation efforts. The dub is clearly a low-budget effort and it shows. Of course, children don't care and the show serves its purpose as a marketing tool so there's no need to change how things are. They even switched recording/production studios and continued using the same cast that they've used since 2006.

Just finished the episode. Really solid filler, even better than the Plusle/Minun episode. It was nice seeing the entire cast and the characterization was good for the main duo and Koharu. Really looking forward to the next ep, I love when they introduce gen 8 Pokémon. Journeys has had some boring episode like the errand episode or the electric thief episode when they just stick to the main crew's Pokémon and some extremely minor other appearances and those episodes are really bland IMO so I'm glad we're getting two galar mons next time.

I like PM version better, one thing I've really liked about PM so far is the depiction of old locales, they've stayed oddly faithful in detail to them while improving colors and making them even more detailed etc. Makes the world really feel alive and connected, which is something previous series lacked. In that regard PM is a success imo

I think giving it spinoffs (as in proper shows of their own) would be a much better idea. Ash is actually really popular despite what loud contrarians would lead you to believe. Meanwhile, Bayblade and Yu-Gi-Oh aren't really well know or talked about as they used to be. Perhaps it's not as interesting, but it obviously leads to losing a lot of the audience.

After the Kanto saga, DP arguably has the strongest first year of any saga. All those early Paul eps, Dawn is focused on right away and has multiple captures and Contests, how fleshed out the Gym leaders were with multiple eps instead of the usual 2, Hunter J, Ash's early captures, and all that foreshadowing.

Early Hoenn is fun too, but you could tell they hadn't planned that much out ahead yet.

Well what do you consider a good start then? All the other sagas (besides SM), all start off similarly and do the same things DP did, it just did it with more structure.

Like how is the beginning of Johto, Hoenn, Unova, or Kalos any different? They all introduce the new main characters, Ash makes his first captures of the region, sometimes a rival debuts early, and then it goes on to Gyms or fillers or whatever.

Look at what happened after Yugi was replaced in Yu-Gi-Oh. Viewership dropped and became no longer as interesting as it used to.

Pansage is Cilan's main pokemon, he was never going to get it. Besides Grookey functioning as the grass monkey.

The writers have so far avoided Go getting the "main" pokemon of older companions. He never got Psyduck or Togepi, he never got Beautifly (he never went back to get another Wurmple), he doesn't have any Dawn pokemon, none of Iris', of Clemont he has the bunny but that's not his main pokemon.

Go does have Goldeen/Poliwag, Geodude/ Pineco, etc. but they were like secondary captures of misty/brock.

Yes the difference between Ash and Alain, that Goh even referenced in the latest episode is that Ash likes to do things his own way. It’s not a matter of him taking charge but rather people follow him because they feel like that’s the best course of action. Paul and Gary used to say “there’s always something significant happening when I run into you” which we know as the audience is because he’s the main character and the story beats go along with his travels. Alain’s entire journey was him following a set path laid out by Lysandre, he was given orders and essentially on a linear rise to where he got. Alain was groomed and didn’t realize it at first because his emotions got in the way.

And that’s what makes his scene of frustration so significant. Alain realized that he let someone else control his life and was completely lost when he realized it was all for nothing. It reminded me of Zero’s “what am I fighting for?” scene in Mega Man. Based Godjima.

Alain was just a self absorbed narcissist like Amber from Invincible who only does good deed so they feel more special & important than others. He didn't care about anybody else as long as he could view himself as somebody important.

You can see that on that one scene where he talk to Professor Sycamore about how much he "suffered" to fight for other people. The thing is, people who fight for others never talks about how much they "suffered" because they never considered it as suffering.

But the anime acted like Alain did nothing wrong and he is the victim. Pretty much like how Invincible tries to establish that Amber did nothing wrong and it was all Mark's fault.

What is there to do? The starters don't need to be on the main cast again, and most of the game seems to take place in a wide open wild area which is basically what the anime does every series anyway. Whatever lore involving Arceus there is will probably be covered in a movie.

So I like that the Alola ep let us see Ash's SM pokemon again, and then the recent ep let us see at least half of Ash's Oak'd Pokemon and Infernape. It does seem like they're reminding the audience of Ash's old pokemon if they are going to be used later on.
