The scalpers were able to take advantage of an environment where supply couldn't meet demand. This is already unraveling as Battle Styles and Vivid Voltage crashed with new printing schedules materializing. If they're able to meet demand, short-term flipping as a scalping strategy is no longer viable. As for long-term reselling it depends; but that's not a bad thing as folks are setting aside space and diligence to deliver mint/minty vintage product in the future. Without them, old boxes would be locked to time.

False. Old boxes have always been around, way before they started skyrocketing to meme prices. Also, having vintage product worth thousands of dollars is literally what attracts scalpers into the market to begin with; as it gives people the impression that "if this product that I used to buy as a kid for $4 a pack is worth thousands now, maybe this new product will be worth thousands in another 20 years". Scalpers capitalize on that because these long term investors will pay any price for product because they have in their mind that "it can only go up".

It's the exact same phenomenon that has plagued watches and sneakers for years.

The art style can appeal. There's a chance that they'll go up - especially if Metazoo takes off as a franchise. That's all priced in considering their first print runs' scarcity. First edition Pokemon base set boxes were scarcily offered and were always notorious for being expensive.

Gen 2 Starters have skyrocketed in popularity, Eeveelutions have skyrocketed in popularity, and nostalgic adults remember watching Lugia in the 2nd movie when they were kids. Meanwhile, Ho-Oh is nowhere near as popular as Lugia, neither are Celebi or the Dogs since most normies didn't see any of the movies after the 2nd one. Also, Shinings in Rev are WAY harder to pull than they are in Destiny; we're talking 3 per box in Destiny vs 2 per CASE in Revelation.

You're completely missing the point. Nothing wrong with making a profit, of course. There IS something wrong with HOW much profit they make. As Rudy himself said, he makes EIGHT FIGURES a year, and he's just one of many. That's insane for a single individual who doesn't actually contribute anything of value. 10000% markups on the regular will do that.

And more importantly, the insane appreciation in value of the old product is what attracts investors to buyout the new product and resell for insane markups.

Yes, because the long term impact could be devastating. We're getting to the point trading cards are nothing but empty piles of value, where all anyone talks about is how much money they're making off them. When it's no different from buying precious metals or stocks, eventually the core audience will lose interest and move on.

But in terms of short term gains? Yeah Nintendo's making bank. I guess long term stability doesn't really mean jack shit; considering that they have so many other sources of revenue to fall back on in the event that Pokémon cards fail.
