I've only seen Zodiac proposed and then disputed. Is there anything besides Zodiac?

Weapons? It seems the most consistent, but do Feraligatr's jaws and Swampert's punches count as weapons?
>Grass
Reptiles? Extinct species? This one's the least apparent of the three.

Could it be the esl's who decided this was the theme, were esl's, didn't know what a clatrop is or was but decided because Water Shuriken was one its moves, it HAD to be based off a throwing star?
I mean, noit as if ninjas weren't familiar with caltrops in the first place either....
