Because there are so many in gen 5. They had to make 150 new ones. This means they had to keep more lower teir designs. didn't have the easy of basic simple designs from gen 1.

why when pokemon turned 3d did the design quality for pokemon get worse? it was on decline for a while, but why?
"the designs have flaws on purpose to give them more character" is apparently a design ethos, but where did they get this idea?

Unova was unironically Masuda and GF's magnum opus, they poured their heart out into making those games and after getting the backlash because "NO KANTOOOOOOOOOOOO POKEMON REEEEEEEEEEE", they figured there was no point doing more than the bare minimum, making the games easier, and catering to Kanto nostalgia constantly because that's what the vocal fanbase wanted.

I personally disagree. It's the most true to the traditional idea of a Western dragon: big, mean, ugly, cave-dwelling winged lizard. It's not the best design out there but I can appreciate it a lot more compared to other Dragons in the series.

The problem with gen 5 is mostly just the starters and legendaries (which is a common problem with newer gens). Plenty of decent mons in the middle, and a good number of strong ones.
