People complain about recent gens having "creepy humanoid Pokemon," or "furries" or whatever...and while the problem has indeed gotten more frequent, it's been there since gen 1. I'm not counting the Machoke line by the way, since the whole gimmick is it has a bodybuilder body and reptile face, and it works well for what it does. But Jynx, Mr. Mime, and Hypno...God...what were they THINKING?! When I first saw Jynx I just thought, "Oh my God, is that an ugly human woman?!" And Mr. Mime and Hypno just look like pedophiles, let's be honest here. The clown who promises the kids candy by being funny only to doom them. Or Hypno's creepy face, and his nose looks like some type of deformed dick or tumor, and his oddly humanoid pose. Alakazam also fits in a little, but it looks cool, so it's different. Hitmonchan is a bit weird, but it at least looks decent enough, and works as a counterpart to the much cooler Hitmonlee and Hitmontop. Then for the current gens...I listed some of the worst example. THE STARTERS. The Fire ones are the WORST ones...say what you want about Emboar's bullshit design, but it doesn't look human at least. Delphox however...uh...I feel uncomfortable. Cinderace...please stop, that's worse...but then we have Incineroar...oh God, are those ABS/PECS?! Please stop! He isn't Machoke goddamnit! He evolved from fucking LITTEN!!! Both are bad, but I gotta got with the current gens being worst, because you don't expect them... Smoochum, Mime Jr, and Drowzee already look super stupid to begin with. You don't expect them to become anything cool IN THE FIRST PLACE. Fennekin, Scorbunny, and Litten however...from cute little fox to furry cosplay fox mage/witch...from cute little bunny to Brazilian soccer player...and last but not least, Litten the kitten, from a cute little kitten to a fucking heel wrestler with ABS. Who the fuck would see that coming? This ain't Digimon or Yokai Watch!

This argument applies for anything. The whole gimmick of Incineroar is that it’s a pro wrestler based on tiger mask and it works well for what it does.

Early gen humanoids are intentional. It's stuff that's (for the most part) supposed to unsettle you, nobody's going to pretend that Hypno is supposed to be this super friendly Pokemon that everybody carries around. The current gen Pokemon (or more specifically, the starters, as Pokemon like Hatterene or Grimmsnarl are fine) are unintentional. The humanoid elements are slapped on to force a theme instead of being natural and end up being awkward and uncanny.

I appreciate the fact that those Gen 1 examples have a somewhat unsettling look. It's a reminder that these are creatures in a world instead of obviously designed characters, at least mostly. Jobmons have always been there yes, but it's a problem that's definitely gotten worse with time. I can believe that all Mr Mimes have a clownish appearance, but I can't believe that every Incineroar is a smirking chad bara tiger. Individuals having the same personality just breaks immersion. Think of it like a cat. They're generally cute looking unless diseased, but cats can have a wide variety of possible personalities. Pokemon should be designed as creatures within an ecosystem, and convey enough personality to give off a feeling of cute/cool/creepy/etc, but do not take their personality so far and blatant that it overpowers the player's imagination.

>>47481189 Most of the whinging about nugen starters along these lines are from either jaded faggots just looking for something to bitch about or autists broken by furries and scalies trying to spite them by similarly hypersexualizing anything bipedal with canid/reptilian features. I feel like the fact that this board gives Blaziken a pass (because there aren't a lot of vocal birdfuckers here) is proof enough of that.
That said, earlier gen humanoids are generally silly looking, simplistic and tend to have themes that aren't too blatant, while there's a lot more in-your-face anthropomorphization that can be off-putting in some newer designs.

>>47481189 There's a difference between creepy and uncomfortable. You can tell that Incineroar or Cinderace weren't intended to be unsettling, but Hypno's name is Sleeper and it abducts children and Jynx is based on an older monster. I think in the stadium games, when it faints, everything but the wig its hair disappears, so its entire body might not even be there; it might just be an apparition.

What is exactly wrong with humanoid pokemon? Seems to me the concept for pokemon being "monsters" often based on Yokai, mythical creatures and folklore often invites anthropomorphism. There are plenty of legends that revolve around creatures that have humanoid shapes. If pokemon limited themselves to always be four- legged animal creatures, it would lose a lot of creativity and charm. Conceptually, humanoid pokemon aren't a problem. Execution is something different though. There, subjectivity applies in full force so it's rather pointless to debate it since it will most likely be reduced to "I like X", "I hate X" and "Imagine having shit taste".
