You do realize that Pokemon was more popular during Gen 7 right? GO + SM literally brought Pokemon back from the brink after the utter garbage that was Gens 5 and 6.

Yeah though the only vivid memory I have is when Ash turned to stone and Pikachu is starting the crying going 'pika pi' the whole theater was suddenly filled with the sounds of kids sobbing

For me it was a double-page spread in a magazine with some new cards. I remember Quilava, Murkrow and Shuckle were there. Still some of my favourites today. At the time I remember the feeling that the idea of new Pokemon was just unbelievably cool. It had somehow never occurred to me before that there could be MORE. More than 150? Who could possibly catch that many?

i still have images printed out off my buddys parents printer of scizor, teddiursa, and sudowoodo taped to my pokemon card binder, which were "leaked" on some early internet website (but it was probabl just the fact that the game was released in japan a year prior)

Technically if you watched the anime the first gen 2 Pokemon you see is Ho-Oh back in the first episode and a few gen 2 Pokemon showed up in season one and the first movie as well, but not counting them it probably was the starters when gen 2 was announced
