That’s the best way to put it. Of course there was occasional trolling but it wasn’t the fucking constant genwarring and nitpicking that goes on now. People generally werent looking for arguments, just shooting the shit about stuff and having fun.
Anons were exceptionally helpful about anything with the games. Need to fill your natdex? Tell what you need. Want a perfect IV of whatever mon of your choice? Sure thing bro I’ve got tons, just give me a derp in the trade and its yours (we called bidoofs derps back then, basically filler for a trade as a way to gift a mon to someone).
There were a lot of people constantly hatching eggs in the background while they browsed the net, which turned into getting perfect IVs. People would hand them out like candy.
There were a lot of comics you’d be insulted for trying to post now. Like a gag about game mechanics being wacky, or making your own nuzlocke to share with people.
Keep in mind global and wifi stuff was pretty new at the time (for pokemon it was, anyway). There was a sense of unity among the fans thanks to that, for the first time you and anyone you met online could have battles or trade together. Technically this happened one gen before /vp/ was created, but the feeling was still around.
I’m sure I’m wearing rose tinted glasses, there were times the board was utter shit and not worth visiting. But for the most part it had a more fun atmosphere, there really was an energy and enthusiasm for the series. If you wanted a thread about a gen or game, there’d naturally be some criticisms, but mostly fondness for it. This aspect is the most different from today, where the baiting has gone from being there to NONSTOP.
There was a lot of fanstuff and draw threads. Lots of fan theories about old and new stuff that felt mysterious (I feel like people were way more invested in that before a canon multiverse became a thing).
It was chill.
