honestly it'd basically be sinnoh. No need to really make the lakes big, though, unless there's exploration, but there isn't really anything interesting to find in the great lakes other than a few small islands, like beaver island, which would probably function like a mirage spot in oras, or a small wild area. It would definitely be the comfiest region though, especially with places like traverse city and mackinac island. Only other defining features I could brainstorm would be
>deer pokemon, probably the most common mon in the region
>a big university location that does research into pokemon center equipment based of UofM
>some sports stadiums/courts, similar to what Unova had
>dead factories
>snow, probably a slippery pathway or ice-puzzle-esque location

Bigfoot belongs to every state, every region has their own from the Honey Island Swamp Monster, the Skunk Ape and Sheepsquatch.

Though I'm not aware of any Bigfoot sightings in Michigan so maybe it should be something else.

Ultra Beast or legendary you find at the bottom of Lake Michigan's counterpart that has the motif of a lot of zebra mussels. I'm not quite sure how to make it distinct from Barbaracle and Stakataka. Maybe no visible sensory organs and having dazzle camo. I guess it would make sense since there is an Ultraman alien called Dada which has a similar look.

Generally, I'd want to emphasize forests and wetlands. There are a lot of neat things that you can find in there, so lots of your early game normal/flying/bug/grass/water types should be available, doing life things. I wonder if constricting player movement to small spaces that might require crouching to pass would be viable. Abandoned buildings also seem like an environment that hasn't been used much. Most in Pokemon are haunted houses with Alola being the real exception, but a factory or water mill or something that is now rustic and having moss overtaking parts would be a distinct feeling. Maybe holes in the ceiling let light through in the day and at night the moon's reflection causes beautiful lighting.

I thought of something for the water starter.
If we take the Loon inspiration a little bit more literal and base if off of the bird and make it crazed - like some sort of berserk fighter? And for the weapon we could go with axes. It's got little ax-head shaped wings in the first and second stage. Not sure what to do for the final stage.... And it should have a mohawk like this duck.

Maybe Water/Steel? Or Water/Dark?
