Gengar is naturally popular firstly and it’s never been forcefully shilled down our throats in every waking moment in this franchise like Zard or the forced starter shillmons post gen 5 and the reason why Charizard is more egregious is for the fact that one, it was the only non legendary to have two megas and it got another form after (what makes this worse is that blastoise and venasaur got nothing in the base game and on top of that their lines were outright unobtainable legitimately pre dlc/raid events so the zard favouritism was far more blatant than it ever was), two charizards gmax was shilled pretty hard during SWSH (failed) prerelease campaign with it being the champions ace, the gmax Kanto wankfest trailer and in SWSH itself no one shuts the fuck up about Leon’s charizard (which ironically is his worst Pokémon that actively drags the rest of his team down). Sure Gengar did get 1 mega and a shitty gmax (that’s literally just a garbage rip off of its mega down to to its shiny basically ripping off of its megas shiny rather than doing something different) however since gengar wasn’t particularly shilled that much by gamefreak, it won’t get as much shit but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t get any whatsoever (as I still stand by its gmax being a inferior mega gengar in every conceivable way).

Gengar and Nidorino were the first pokemon to appear in the RGBY game screen, both happen to embody the "monster" aspect very well in being more than a cartoon animal. Having at least one of them get consistent love is fairer than starter/rat/legend favoritism.
